How to Play Glyph Match

What it is

Glyph Match is a speedy memory game. Sixteen face-down cards hide eight pairs of glowing symbols, like circles, stars, diamonds and hexagons. Flip them two at a time and find every matching pair before the clock runs out. It’s a great warm-up for your brain.

How to play (rules)

The board has 16 cards in a 4x4 grid, shuffled fresh every game.
Flip one card, then a second one.
If the two glyphs match, they stay face up and count as a pair.
If they don’t match, both cards flip back over after a brief moment. Try to remember where they were.
You have 60 seconds to find all 8 pairs. A bar under the timer shrinks as time runs down and turns pink in the last ten seconds.
The top of the screen shows the time left, your number of flips, and how many pairs you’ve found.
The game ends when you find the last pair or when the timer hits zero.

Controls (desktop and mobile)

Mobile: tap a card to flip it.
Desktop: click a card, or use the arrow keys to move the green highlight and press Enter or Space to flip.
P pauses and R restarts. F toggles full-screen.
M mutes or unmutes the sound.
Two toolbar buttons control sound and motion. Mute sound (M) turns the sound effects off, and its label changes to “Unmute sound (M)” so you can switch them back on. Reduce motion makes cards change instantly instead of flipping over, stops the little shake when two cards don’t match, and turns off the bounce, sparkles and flash when you find pairs or clear the board. It starts out matching your device’s reduce-motion setting. Each button has a short text label next to or under its icon. Your choices are remembered on your device and shared by every game in the Arcade.

Scoring and high scores

Every pair you find is worth 100 points.
Clear the whole board and you get two bonuses on top:
- Time bonus: 10 points for every second left on the clock.
- Flip bonus: 5 points for every flip under 40.
If time runs out first, you keep 100 points per pair but get no bonuses.

The best possible score is 1,520. Fewer flips and faster clears are what push you toward it. Your best score is saved in your browser. When a run ends, the game-over screen shows your score next to your best and adds ”★ New best!” when you beat it. If your score would make the global top-10 board, the screen tells you where you’d rank and lets you enter a name and press Submit. If the board is full and you fall short, it shows the score you need to get in. When Glyph Match is the daily challenge, the goal is to clear the board with 24 flips or fewer.

Tips to beat your best

Flip unknown cards early to scout the board, then use what you’ve learned.
Say the shapes and their positions in your head, for example “star, top left”.
When your first flip shows a glyph you’ve already seen, go straight for its partner.
Don’t flip at random when you already know a match. Every wasted flip lowers your bonus.
Work in a pattern, such as row by row, so it’s easier to remember what you’ve seen.
