How to Play Neon Snake

What it is

Neon Snake is a glowing take on a true arcade classic. You steer a bright green serpent around a grid, gobbling pink energy orbs to grow longer. Every orb makes you a little faster, so the game starts relaxed and gets intense as your tail grows.

How to play (rules)

  • Your snake starts three segments long, moving to the right.
  • Steer it into the pink energy orb. Each orb adds one segment, and a new orb appears in a random empty spot.
  • Each orb also speeds the snake up a little, until it reaches its top speed.
  • Running into a wall or into your own body ends the game.
  • You can’t turn straight back into yourself. Reversing direction is ignored.
  • Your current length is shown in the top-left corner of the board.

Controls (desktop and mobile)

  • Desktop: use the arrow keys or WASD to steer.
  • Mobile: swipe in the direction you want to go, or use the on-screen arrow pad below the game.
  • You can line up to three turns in advance. Quick presses like “up, then left” will play out in order, which helps with tight corners at high speed.
  • P pauses, R restarts and F toggles full-screen. The game also pauses by itself if you switch tabs.
  • M mutes or unmutes the sound.
  • Two toolbar buttons control sound and motion. Mute sound (M) turns the sound effects off, and its label changes to “Unmute sound (M)” so you can switch them back on. Reduce motion stops the energy orb from pulsing and popping in, and turns off screen shake, flashes and particle bursts. It starts out matching your device’s reduce-motion setting. Each button has a short text label next to or under its icon. Your choices are remembered on your device and shared by every game in the Arcade.

Scoring and high scores

Each orb is worth 10 points, so your score is simply ten times the number of orbs you’ve eaten. The board is 18 cells wide and 23 cells tall, so in theory you could keep eating until the snake fills the whole grid.

Your best score is saved in your browser. When a run ends, the game-over screen shows your score next to your best and adds ”★ New best!” when you beat it. If your score would make the global top-10 board, the screen tells you where you’d rank and lets you enter a name and press Submit. If the board is full and you fall short, it shows the score you need to get in. When Neon Snake is the daily challenge, the goal is to reach a length of 15 without touching a wall.

Tips to beat your best

  • Plan your path before you turn, especially once you’re fast. Think two moves ahead.
  • Keep to open space. Avoid diving into corners or narrow pockets you can’t turn out of.
  • As you get longer, try sweeping the board in wide loops so your tail stays out of the way.
  • Use the turn queue for quick U-turns: tap two directions in a row instead of waiting.
  • If an orb appears in a risky spot, it’s fine to circle around and approach it from the safe side.
