How to Play Neon Merge
What it is
Neon Merge is a sliding number puzzle on a 4x4 grid of glowing tiles. Every move pushes all the tiles at once, and matching numbers that bump into each other fuse into one bigger number. It’s easy to learn, and it’s hard to put down once you start chasing bigger tiles.
How to play (rules)
- The game starts with two tiles on the board.
- Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the direction you choose: up, down, left or right.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth double. Two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on.
- A tile can only merge once per move.
- After every move that changes the board, a new tile appears in a random empty cell. It’s usually a 2 and sometimes a 4.
- A move that doesn’t shift anything doesn’t count, and no new tile appears.
- The game ends with “Grid locked” when the board is full and no neighboring tiles match. The end screen shows your biggest tile.
There’s no finish line, so you can keep going as long as you can find moves.
Controls (desktop and mobile)
- Desktop: use the arrow keys or WASD to slide.
- Mobile: swipe in any direction on the board, or use the on-screen arrow pad under the game.
- P pauses, R restarts and F toggles full-screen. The toolbar has buttons for the same actions.
- M mutes or unmutes the sound.
- Two toolbar buttons control sound and motion. Mute sound (M) turns the sound effects off, and its label changes to “Unmute sound (M)” so you can switch them back on. Reduce motion turns off screen shake, flashes and particle bursts. Tiles jump straight to their new spots instead of sliding, and new and merged tiles skip the pop. It starts out matching your device’s reduce-motion setting. Each button has a short text label next to or under its icon. Your choices are remembered on your device and shared by every game in the Arcade.
A move counter above the board shows how many moves you’ve made.
Sound and effects
Neon Merge has sound effects and visual effects. Tiles glide into place, new tiles pop in, and every merge plays a tone that climbs higher as your tiles get bigger, with a burst of sparks and a pop-up showing the points. Big merges, like making a 128 tile or three merges in one move, shake the screen. Beating your previous best mid-run sets off a “NEW BEST!” celebration.
Scoring and high scores
Every merge adds the value of the new tile to your score. Merging two 8s into a 16 is worth 16 points, and merging two 64s is worth 128. Big merges late in a run add up quickly.
Your best score is saved in your browser. When a run ends, the game-over screen shows your score next to your best and adds ”★ New best!” when you beat it. If your score would make the global top-10 board, the screen tells you where you’d rank and lets you enter a name and press Submit. If the board is full and you fall short, it shows the score you need to get in. When Neon Merge is the daily challenge, the goal is to build a 256 tile.
Tips to beat your best
- Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile there. Many players favor a bottom corner.
- Stick to two or three directions most of the time, and only use the fourth when you have to.
- Keep the row next to your big tile full, so the tile can’t get knocked out of its corner.
- Line up tiles in a chain of decreasing values so merges roll toward your corner.
- Before a move, check where the new tile might appear and whether it could block you.
- Don’t rush. There’s no timer, so take a second to look for the merge that sets up the next one.
